Captain Sir Alexander Burnes (16 May 1805 to 2 November 1841) was a Scottish traveller and explorer who took part in The Great Game. He was nicknamed Bokhara Burnes for his role in establishing contact with and exploring Bukhara, which made his name. Speaks Hindi and Persian.

Brother of Alexander Burns (unknown to 2 November 1841). Little is known about the brother (including his real name). For our purposes an older brother, with business interests in India. Visiting his brother in Afghanistan - a backwater that no sane person would ever visit let alone stay in!
